Product Overview:
Angostura Aromatic Bitters is a highly concentrated food & beverage flavouring. Made from a secret formula, its unique blend of natural herbs & spices were originally a medicine & digestif but today is mainly used as a key ingredient in cocktails.
Angostura bitters are not bitter when added to food or drinks - instead they add complexity and marry flavours together. As well as cocktails it can be used to flavour foods such as: soups, salads, fruit juices, jellies, sherbets, water-ices, ice-cream, sauces for puddings, mince & fruit pies etc.
The original drink identified with Angostura Bitters is the Pink Gin but soon it was used in many other cocktails such as the Long vodka.
In the United States it is best known for its use in whiskey cocktails: the Old Fashioned, made with whiskey, bitters, sugar, and soda water, and The Manhattan, made usually with rye whiskey and sweet vermouth.
In Latin America a Pisco Sour requires a few drops added on top of the foam, both for aroma and decoration.
The Story of Angostura Bitters:
The legend begins with German Dr Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert. A supporter of the liberal revolutionary ideals sweeping the world, he left his homeland in 1820 to help Simon Bolivar fight against the occupying Spanish empire. He arrived in Venezuela where Bolivar appointed him Surgeon-General of the military hospital in the town of Angostura.
Siegert was treating soldiers battered by the Spanish and by severe fevers & stomach disorders. Using local Amerindian botanical knowledge he researched the qualities of tropical herbs and plants, and finally arrived at a unique blend of herbs which he called the “Amargo Aromatico” or aromatic bitters. But the name of the place people came to be healed stuck - and they became Angostura Aromatic Bitters.
In 1830 Siegert exported his unique aromatic bitters to England and Trinidad. By 1850, he had resigned his commission in the Venezuelan army, to concentrate on the manufacture of his bitters, as demand had leapt ahead of supply.
By the time Dr. Siegert died in 1870, his reputation and that of his Angostura aromatic bitters were internationally established.
